Oil painting art brush question?
Im starting to paint using oils and need new brushes. Im looking for large brushes....like 2 inches wide and I'm having a hard time finding it. Is it possible to use brushes sold at hardware stores for art?
If you are just starting to oil paint (and have no idea whether or not you want to continue) there is no reason to invest in brushes. The sad truth with all painting, is that brushes get very expensive very fast. The reason you are having such a hard time finding a big brush in art stores, it that it would be a several hundred dollar brush, which no one is going to leave out in the open to get damaged or stolen. Nice brushes do make a visible difference when painting (as do nice paints), but there is no reason to invest while starting out as a student. You are going to need bristle brushes (sometimes the plastic and foam brushes melt or do bad things with oil paint solvents). Look for brushes with finer 'hairs' and a high, tight ferrule. These brushes will generally be flats. Of cousre, you can take a pair of scissors to it and turn it into an angle, bright, or filbert.
No matter what you do, though, this brush will never give you a smooth stroke. For that, you will need natural hair (sometimes a synthetic blend). These are the brushes that will cost you, but with proper care, they can last for years. I would recomend looking at art vendor websites and wait for them to clear out brush inventory. That is how I got a few of those $200 dollar brushes for only $40 each. Dick Blick is my favorite for brush deals. They also do 10% off for students.
