Why does my dentist drill such big holes in my teeth, regardless of the size of the cavity?
My dentist found cavities in two of my bottom molars and proceeded to drill them. One was a big cavity and needed a filing near the gum line, while the other one was small. Which was why I was so surprised when I opened my mouth and saw two huge shiny silver fillings which covered the full chewing surface of my teeth. Both fillings looked nearly identical in size. Why should a small cavity require the same size filling as a really big one?
I had to chuckle when I read where one answer so that he could charge more. In dentistry, fillings are not charged based on their size, they are charged based on how many surfaces they cover. It wouldn't matter if a filling was 6mm wide or 12 mm wide, as long as it was on just one surface of the tooth the charge would be the same.
Just because decay looks small on the outside, the enamel, doesn't mean it is small when it reaches the second layer of the tooth, the dentin which is much softer. I have seen cavities that look really tiny and when we start removing them, they spread out really large when they hit the dentin.
