Compound machine?
I am to design and build a machine that can lift a small quantity of sand around 200g and 1kg (the load needs to be worked out from the mass used) to a height of 10cm or more above the ground my compound machine must use 2 or more simple machines such as wood, cardboard, nails, pins, straws, elastic bands, cotton reels etc. can be used. comercal equipment cannot be used. I hope i have given you some info please help me this is for my science assignment it would be greatly appreciated if you could give me links or help me out on how to build it please i am begging you my homework is due soon please! note must be a year 7-9 style not to complicated just perfect
I know it is a boring question but please guys this is an assignment there always boring lol but please it's due in 3 more weeks and i really need to get started
You need to experiment with the different materials to find out
* if you put the sand in this, will it spill out ... for example if you were using a net whose holes are larger than the grains of sand, it is going to spill out
* what kind of strength is the material ... how much weight of sand will cause the paper to tear
So that tells you what strength of materials needed to hold the sand that you are lifting
Same kind of thinking experiment to see what is needed to do the actual lifting
Suppose the sand is contained in something wooden you constructed, that has a base and sides ... that adds to the weight to be lifted ... weight of wood and weight of nails etc. in addition to that of the sand
* if you use cotton threads to pull up, they may break
* what has the strength to do it lots of times, not break
Simple experiments like this can be done to tell you something about the materials your engine must be made of. Be sure to write up the experiments you did, what they were intended to find out, what you found out, since that will help your grade.
